OVERVIEW

Premium Austenitic Manganese Alloy for Severe Impact

The Lincoln Electric Wearshield® 15CrMn is a specialized Stick (SMAW) electrode designed to produce a premium austenitic chromium-manganese deposit. Engineered for industrial maintenance and repair operations, this electrode excels in environments characterized by severe impact and gouging. Unlike standard hardfacing electrodes that may be limited in deposit thickness, the Wearshield® 15CrMn allows for unlimited layer application. This feature is critical for rebuilding heavily worn components where significant dimensional restoration is required before a final wear surface is applied.

Metallurgically, the deposit is designed to join Hadfield manganese steel to itself or to carbon steel, making it an indispensable consumable for the mining, aggregate, and railroad industries. The alloy produces a tough, high-strength deposit that exhibits work-hardening properties. While the as-welded deposit is relatively soft, it rapidly hardens when subjected to impact, creating a durable surface that resists deformation while retaining a ductile core. This dual-property characteristic prevents spalling and cracking under heavy shock loads.

In addition to its primary role as a build-up and joining electrode, Wearshield® 15CrMn serves as an excellent buffer layer on carbon steel. When applying harder, more brittle chromium carbide hardfacing deposits (such as Wearshield® 60), using 15CrMn as an underlayment helps absorb shock and prevents the hardfacing from delaminating. The electrode is formulated for operability in all positions (except vertical down), providing maintenance teams with the flexibility to perform repairs on equipment in situ without extensive disassembly.

Key Industrial Applications:

  • Mining & Aggregate: Rebuilding crusher hammers, rock crusher rolls, and sizing screens.
  • Railroad Maintenance: Repairing manganese steel railroad frogs and track components.
  • Construction: Hardfacing earthmoving equipment buckets and teeth subjected to heavy impact.
  • General Fabrication: Joining dissimilar manganese-to-carbon steel connections.

FAQ

It is primarily used for joining, repairing, or building up austenitic manganese steel parts that are subject to severe impact.

Yes, it is excellent for joining manganese steel to carbon steel or for use as a build-up layer on carbon steel before applying a harder facing.

No, Wearshield 15CrMn can be applied in unlimited layers, making it ideal for restoring heavily worn parts to their original dimensions.

No, the deposit is designed to work-harden under impact. It is relatively soft as welded but hardens significantly in service.

You can weld in all positions except vertical down. This makes it versatile for field repairs on stationary equipment.

Yes, deposits made with Wearshield 15CrMn can be flame cut, which is helpful if rework or removal is necessary.

This specific SKU (ED021980) is a 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) diameter electrode.

It offers some abrasion resistance, but its primary strength is impact resistance. For high abrasion, use it as a base layer and cap with a chromium carbide electrode like Wearshield 60.
