OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of ERTi-2 Titanium TIG Rods

The ERTi-2 Titanium TIG Rod is a premium-quality filler metal designed for the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) of commercial pure (CP) titanium alloys. Classified under AWS A5.16, this Grade 2 titanium rod is widely recognized as the "workhorse" of the industrial titanium market. It provides an optimal balance of moderate strength and excellent ductility, making it the most commonly specified grade for general corrosion-resistant applications. The 1/16-inch (1.6mm) diameter allows for precise heat control and bead placement, essential when welding reactive metals like titanium.

Metallurgically, ERTi-2 is unalloyed titanium with controlled levels of oxygen and iron to ensure consistent mechanical properties. It exhibits outstanding resistance to corrosion in highly oxidizing environments, including wet chlorine, nitric acid, and metallic chlorides. This makes it indispensable in chemical processing and marine environments. When welding with ERTi-2, strict attention must be paid to gas shielding; the weld pool and the cooling heat-affected zone (HAZ) must be protected by high-purity argon or helium to prevent embrittlement caused by atmospheric contamination (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen).

This 5lb tube of cut-length rods (36") is manufactured to rigorous standards to ensure a clean surface finish, free from oils or oxides that could introduce porosity. It is compatible with welding ASTM Grade 2 base metals and can also be used to weld Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4, provided the design requirements match the filler properties. It is not recommended for welding high-strength titanium alloys like Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) unless ductility is the primary concern over strength.

FAQ

ERTi-2 is Commercially Pure (CP) titanium, offering excellent corrosion resistance and ductility. ERTi-5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloyed titanium offering much higher strength but lower ductility. They are not interchangeable.

Yes, absolutely. Titanium is highly reactive to oxygen and nitrogen at high temperatures. You must protect the weld puddle and the cooling metal (until it drops below ~800°F) with inert gas using a trailing shield.

No. Welding titanium to steel results in extremely brittle intermetallic compounds that will crack immediately. Titanium can only be welded to other titanium alloys or compatible reactive metals like zirconium or tantalum.

100% Argon is the standard. For thicker sections requiring deeper penetration, an Argon/Helium mix can be used. The gas must be high purity (99.999%) with a low dew point.

While Grade 2 Titanium is biocompatible, specific medical applications often require ASTM F67 standards. Check your project specifications to ensure AWS A5.16 ERTi-2 meets the regulatory requirements.

Store them in a clean, dry environment. While titanium doesn't rust like steel, surface contamination (dust, oil, grease) can cause weld defects. Keep them in the tube until ready to use.

A typical ERTi-2 weld deposit will have a tensile strength of approximately 50,000 psi (345 MPa), matching the properties of Grade 2 base metal.
