The coating is engineered to resist moisture absorption, a vital characteristic for preventing hydrogen-induced cracking (cold cracking) in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of hardenable steels. This 5/32-inch (4.0 mm) diameter variant operates optimally on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP). The iron powder content in the coating increases deposition rates compared to non-iron powder equivalents, improving travel speeds and overall productivity. The slag system is designed for easy removal, revealing a smooth bead profile with minimal spatter. It is an all-position electrode, capable of producing X-ray quality welds in flat, horizontal, vertical-up, and overhead positions.
Storage and Handling: As a low-hydrogen consumable, Hoballoy 10018-D2 must be stored in a dry environment. Once the hermetically sealed 50 lb can is opened, electrodes should be maintained in a rod oven at temperatures between 250°F and 300°F (120°C - 150°C) to preserve their low-hydrogen status. Reconditioning of exposed electrodes should follow manufacturer guidelines, typically requiring baking at higher temperatures.
