OVERVIEW

High-Performance Metal-Cored Wire for Industrial Fabrication

The Hobart FabCOR 86R .052" Metal-Cored Welding Wire is a premium consumable designed to address the specific challenges of heavy industrial manufacturing. Engineered with a composite metal-cored structure, this wire combines the high deposition efficiency of flux-cored wires with the high travel speeds and clean finish of solid wires. The "86R" formulation is distinctively enriched with higher levels of deoxidizing elements, such as silicon and manganese. This chemical composition provides exceptional tolerance for contaminants, making it the ideal choice for welding over mill scale, rust, and primers without sacrificing weld quality or mechanical integrity.

Classified as E70C-6M H4 under AWS standards, the FabCOR 86R delivers consistent mechanical properties with a tensile strength typically exceeding 70,000 psi. It is designed for use with Argon-rich shielding gas mixtures (typically 75% to 95% Argon with a CO2 balance), which promotes a stable spray transfer mode. This results in a soft, smooth arc with virtually no spatter, significantly reducing post-weld cleaning time and abrasive costs. The 44lb spool size is optimized for industrial wire feeders, providing a substantial amount of material to minimize changeover downtime in high-volume production environments.

Technical Advantages & Efficiency

For fabrication shops looking to increase throughput, the FabCOR 86R offers higher deposition rates than comparable solid wires of the same diameter. The tubular design increases current density at the arc, leading to faster melt-off rates and deeper penetration profiles. This wire excels in single and multi-pass applications, particularly in the flat and horizontal positions. Its fluid puddle characteristics ensure excellent wetting at the toes of the weld, reducing the likelihood of cold lap and stress risers. Furthermore, the low hydrogen designation (H4) ensures that the weld deposit is resistant to hydrogen-induced cracking, a critical factor in structural steel and heavy equipment manufacturing.

Whether utilized in robotic automation or semi-automatic handheld welding, the Hobart FabCOR 86R provides the reliability and performance required for critical welds in shipbuilding, railcar construction, and general heavy fabrication. Its ability to bridge gaps and handle imperfect surface conditions makes it a versatile asset in any professional welding operation.

FAQ

Hobart FabCOR 86R is designed for use with Argon/CO2 mixtures. The recommended range is 75% to 95% Argon with the balance being CO2. A 75/25 or 90/10 mix is commonly used to achieve a stable spray transfer.

No, this is a Metal-Cored wire. While it is tubular like flux-cored wire, it is filled with metallic powders rather than flux. It produces very little slag (mostly silica islands) and requires shielding gas.

The 'R' indicates a formulation with higher levels of deoxidizers (Silicon and Manganese). This gives the wire superior tolerance to mill scale, rust, and other surface contaminants compared to standard metal-cored wires.

FabCOR 86R runs on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as DC+ or Reverse Polarity.

This wire is primarily designed for Flat and Horizontal positions due to the fluid nature of the metal-core puddle. Out-of-position welding (vertical/overhead) is generally difficult without pulsed waveforms.

Because metal-cored wire is tubular and can be crushed, it is best to use V-Knurled or U-Groove drive rolls. Avoid using standard V-Groove rolls with excessive tension, as this can deform the wire.

It does not produce a full slag covering like flux-cored or stick electrodes. It produces small 'silica islands' on the surface of the weld bead which are easily removed.

It is classified as E70C-6M H4 per AWS A5.18 standards.
