The Hobart HB-28 is a premium mild steel solid welding wire designed to meet the rigorous demands of industrial fabrication. Classified as an AWS ER70S-6, this wire is engineered with an elevated content of manganese and silicon deoxidizers. These chemical properties make the HB-28 exceptionally capable of handling base metals that may not be perfectly clean, effectively managing contaminants such as light rust, mill scale, and oil to produce sound, porosity-free welds.

This 0.045-inch diameter wire is supplied on a 45lb spool, suitable for heavy-duty industrial wire feeders. The wire features a high-quality copper coating which serves dual purposes: it enhances electrical conductivity for a stable arc and reduces friction within the liner and contact tip for smooth, consistent feeding. This reliability is critical in automated or high-volume manual welding operations where feed interruptions can lead to costly downtime.

The HB-28 is formulated to provide excellent wetting characteristics, ensuring a flat bead profile and uniform tie-in at the toes of the weld. It operates effectively with both 100% CO2 shielding gas for deep penetration and economy, as well as Argon/CO2 mixtures for reduced spatter and improved bead aesthetics. It is an ideal choice for single or multi-pass welding on carbon steels in positions appropriate for the process.

The wire typically yields a tensile strength of approximately 87,000 psi and a yield strength of 72,000 psi when welded with 100% CO2, meeting or exceeding AWS A5.18 requirements. It is designed for DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) polarity.
