OVERVIEW

High-Performance Low-Alloy MIG Wire

The Hobart Quantum Arc D2 is a premium copper-coated solid wire designed for the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of carbon and low-alloy steels. Classified as ER80S-D2 by the American Welding Society (AWS) under specification A5.28, this wire is engineered with a specific chemical composition containing approximately 0.50% Molybdenum and high levels of Manganese and Silicon. This unique formulation provides exceptional deoxidation capabilities, allowing the wire to perform well even over mill scale and minor surface contaminants, while producing welds with superior tensile strength and impact toughness compared to standard mild steel wires.

Intended for high-strength applications, the Quantum Arc D2 is capable of producing X-ray quality welds that are virtually free of porosity and slag. The addition of Molybdenum enhances the mechanical properties of the weld deposit, maintaining strength even at elevated service temperatures. This makes it an excellent choice for fabricating high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels often found in heavy industrial sectors, such as crane manufacturing, earthmoving equipment, and pressure vessels. The wire operates smoothly with both 100% Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Argon/CO2 shielding gas mixtures, offering flexibility in process setup depending on the required penetration profile and arc characteristics.

Supplied in a substantial 600 lb Robo Pak, this product is specifically tailored for high-volume manufacturing environments, such as robotic cells or hard automation stations. The bulk packaging minimizes downtime associated with spool changes, significantly increasing arc-on time and overall productivity. The precision winding and copper coating ensure consistent feeding characteristics, reducing wear on liners and contact tips, which is critical for maintaining the tight tolerances required in automated welding. The drum packaging also protects the wire from environmental contaminants, ensuring that the low-hydrogen characteristics of the deposit are maintained until the moment of welding.
