OVERVIEW

Industrial Grade ER70S-6 Solid MIG Wire

The Murex S6 .045 MIG Wire is a premium mild steel solid wire formulated to meet AWS A5.18 ER70S-6 classifications. This wire is engineered with elevated levels of silicon and manganese, which act as powerful deoxidizers during the welding process. These chemical properties make it significantly more forgiving than ER70S-3 wires when welding on base metals that exhibit surface contaminants such as mill scale, light rust, or oil. The wire is designed for use with Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) polarity and operates effectively with both 100% Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Argon/CO2 shielding gas mixtures.

This 44lb (20kg) spool is sized for industrial wire feeders commonly found in fabrication shops, manufacturing plants, and heavy equipment repair facilities. The 0.045-inch diameter is a versatile choice for medium-to-heavy plate thicknesses, offering higher deposition rates than 0.035-inch wires while maintaining control in out-of-position welds when using short-circuit transfer. The copper coating on the wire ensures excellent electrical conductivity and protects the wire from corrosion during storage, while also facilitating smooth feeding through the liner and contact tip to reduce downtime associated with bird-nesting or burn-backs.

Technically, the increased manganese content also serves to increase the tensile strength of the weld deposit, ensuring robust joints in structural applications. It is suitable for single-pass welds on sheet metal where travel speed is critical, as well as multiple-pass welds on thick sections used in construction and mining equipment. The wire produces a flat to slightly convex bead profile with excellent wetting action, minimizing post-weld grinding and cleanup.

FAQ

This ER70S-6 wire works well with 100% CO2 for deep penetration and lower cost, or a 75% Argon / 25% CO2 mix (C25) for a smoother arc, less spatter, and better bead appearance.

Yes, the 'S6' classification indicates higher levels of silicon and manganese deoxidizers, making it specifically designed to handle moderate rust, mill scale, and surface contaminants better than S3 or S2 wires.

This is a 44lb (approx. 20kg) spool. It typically requires an industrial-sized wire feeder or a machine capable of holding 12-inch diameter spools.

This solid wire requires Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as Reverse Polarity.

Yes, .045 wire can be used for all-position welding (vertical, overhead) typically using the short-circuit transfer mode, though it is often used in the flat and horizontal positions for spray transfer on thicker materials.

ER70S-6 has higher silicon and manganese content than ER70S-3. This provides better deoxidizing capabilities for dirty steel and generally results in a flatter bead with smoother tie-in.

No, this is a solid MIG wire and requires an external shielding gas cylinder to protect the weld pool.
